Top Ten Chicago Outdoor Activities

Getting outside is a tried and true stress management tool. Especially in Chicago, where the weather can make enjoying the outdoors challenging at times. Spending time outdoors feels even sweeter after hibernating indoors during the winter. 

Here are the top ten Chicago outdoor activities in no particular order:

Ping Tom Memorial Park

Located at 1700 S Wentworth Ave in Chicago’s Chinatown, Ping Tom Memorial Park has it all! Walking trails, views of the city and a boathouse to name a few activities.  

Skokie Sculpture Park

Located on the east side of McCormick Boulevard, between Dempster Street and Touhy Avenue, in Skokie, Illinois. Skokie Sculpture Park is a 2 mile long bike path with over 60 striking sculptures.

Des Plaines River Trail

The trail runs alongside the Des Plaines River and is over 56 miles long. The Des Plaines River Trail is surrounded by protecting watershed habitat and forestland through much of Lake and Cook Counties.

Garfield Park Conservatory

Located at 300 N Central Park Ave, on Chicago’s west side, the Garfield Park Conservatory showcases thousands of plant species from around the world in both indoor and outdoor gardens. 

Montrose Beach

Located at 4400 N. Lake Shore Drive on Chicago’s north side, Montrose Beach is a popular destination for both dogs and human swimmers.  

The 606 Trail

The  2.7-mile elevated rail trail located on Chicago’s west side has several access points for walkers, runners and bikers. The 606 is a one of a kind urban trail. 

Lincoln Park Zoo

Located at 2001 N Clark St. on Chicago’s near-north side, Lincoln Park Zoo offers free admissions to all guests. 

Humboldt Park Lagoon

Located at 1200 N. Humboldt Blvd. on Chicago’s west side, Humboldt Park Lagoon has been in the media for Chance the Snapper, the alligator that shut down the park for several days in 2019 when he escaped from his owner’s home.  

Lakefront Trail

The 18.5 mile long trail that runs along the western end of lake michigan is a classic outdoor destination in Chicago; The lakefront trail boasts breathtaking views of the city skyline. 

Rockwell on the River Kayak Rental 

Located at 3057 N Rockwell St. on Chicago’s north side, Rockwell on the River offers a unique kayaking experience.
